What is the 60-60 Rule?

What is the 60-60 Rule?

(opens in a new tab)

It is an easy-to-remember guideline recommended by audiologists to prevent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL):

  1. 60% Volume: Listen to your music, movie, or phone call at no more than 60% of the maximum volume.
  2. 60 Minutes: Listen for no more than 60 minutes at a time.

Why the “Time Off” Matters: The Recovery Period

Most people understand the volume part, but they ignore the time limit. Here is why that 60-minute break is non-negotiable.

Inside your inner ear (cochlea), you have thousands of tiny, delicate hair cells. When loud sound hits them, they bend and flatten, much like grass that has been walked on.

If you step off the grass, it springs back up. But if you stand on it for hours, the damage becomes permanent.

Your ears work the same way. Listening requires energy and creates metabolic stress on those hair cells. Taking a break gives your ears a chance to recover. It allows blood flow to return and chemical balances to reset. Without that recovery time, temporary fatigue can turn into permanent damage.
